Thomasville is a documentary project created during the 75th family reunion of the Williams family in Thomasville, Georgia.
I was invited by a close friend to join her family for the weekend-long gathering held on Kentavia Williams Farm, where multiple generations came together to celebrate family history, kinship, and tradition. Although I was a guest, much of what I witnessed felt deeply familiar. Her family reunion echoed much of the rhythm I remembered from my own family: a Friday night fish fry, a Saturday barbecue followed by a Saturday night dance and a Sunday church service before saying farewell.
Throughout the weekend, I noticed so subtly how culture is passed from one generation to the next. One thing that stood out to me was her family's deep connection to dirt bikes. Younger boys watched their big cousins ride freely across the farmland, studying their movements with admiration and anticipation. If they were good, their uncles and big cousins might let them ride along. In quieter moments, they climbed on top parked bikes and gripped the handlebars. It was difficult not to see their imagination and glimpse into the future versions of themselves they hoped to become.
